What we believe

Our philosophy shapes everything we do. It is the lens through which we view health, research, and our role in society.

Evidence is the foundation

We believe that sound decisions — whether in policy, practice, or community action — must be rooted in rigorous, context‑relevant evidence. We commit to generating, synthesising, and translating evidence that is credible and actionable.

Community is the centre

Health and well‑being are shaped by communities. We place communities at the heart of our work, respecting their knowledge, priorities, and agency. We co‑create solutions that are culturally appropriate and locally owned.

Equity drives us

We are committed to reducing health inequities. We prioritise the needs of marginalised and underserved populations, ensuring that our research and interventions reach those who need them most.

Collaboration multiplies impact

We believe in the power of partnerships. We work with governments, universities, NGOs, and community organisations, recognising that complex health challenges require collective action.

Learning is continuous

We embrace a culture of learning and adaptation. We reflect on our successes and failures, share lessons openly, and continuously improve our methods and approaches.

Integrity is non‑negotiable

We conduct our work with honesty, transparency, and accountability. We adhere to the highest ethical standards and are answerable to the communities and partners we serve.

Our philosophy is simple: listen to communities, trust the evidence, and act with integrity. Everything else follows.

How we work

Our approach translates philosophy into action. We combine rigorous methods with participatory processes to ensure our work is both scientifically sound and socially relevant.

Participatory and inclusive

We engage communities, policymakers, and practitioners as active partners, not passive subjects. From priority setting to dissemination, we ensure diverse voices are heard and valued.

  • Community advisory groups for every project
  • Participatory research methods (e.g., Photovoice, community mapping)
  • Feedback loops to adapt interventions

Implementation science

We study how, why, and under what conditions evidence‑based interventions work in real‑world settings. This helps us identify barriers and enablers to effective implementation.

  • Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework
  • Mixed‑methods evaluation
  • Contextual adaptation

Data‑driven and evidence‑informed

We use the best available evidence, combined with local knowledge, to design and refine interventions. We monitor progress with robust indicators and use data for learning.

  • Systematic reviews and evidence synthesis
  • Routine data collection and analysis
  • Data visualisation for decision‑making

Capacity strengthening

We invest in people and institutions. Through training, mentoring, and collaborative research, we build sustainable capacity for evidence‑to‑action at all levels.

  • Fellowships and masterclasses
  • Co‑mentoring with partners
  • Tailored technical assistance

Our core methodologies

We draw on a diverse toolkit: community‑based participatory research, co‑design, implementation science, knowledge translation, systems thinking, and behavioural insights. We select and combine methods based on the question, context, and community.

The journey so far

Utafiti Wellness was born from a shared vision: to bridge the gap between research and action in Kenya. Our story is one of passion, persistence, and partnership.

Origins

Founded in 2025 by a group of Kenyan researchers, public health practitioners, and community advocates, UWRA emerged from the recognition that too much research never translates into better health for communities. We saw the need for an organisation dedicated to evidence translation — not just generating knowledge, but ensuring it reaches those who can use it.

Our founders brought together expertise in epidemiology, health policy, community engagement, and implementation science. They shared a deep commitment to social justice and a belief that communities must be at the forefront of change.

Though we are a young organisation, our momentum has been remarkable. In just a short time, we have built a strong foundation of partnerships, launched flagship programmes, and started to see tangible changes in the communities we serve.

Milestones

2025

UWRA officially registered as a research association in Kenya. Conducted our first community needs assessment in two counties. Launched the inaugural fellowship programme, training 12 early‑career researchers in knowledge translation. Partnered with the Ministry of Health on a policy brief series.

2026

Expanded to five counties with active engagements. Published our first implementation research study on maternal health. Hosted the inaugural National Research Translation Conference. Established the Community Advisory Network — a platform for community voices in research. Scaled up digital health innovations in partnership with local tech hubs. Reached over 1,000 community members through outreach and engagement activities.

2026 & beyond

We are currently scaling up our work on non‑communicable diseases, mental health, and climate adaptation. New partnerships are being forged with universities, county governments, and international organisations. Our fellowship network is growing, and we are developing a dedicated masterclass series for practitioners and policymakers.

Looking ahead

We are expanding our geographic reach, deepening our work on climate and health, and scaling up our digital health portfolio. We remain committed to our core philosophy: evidence that is co‑created, community‑owned, and action‑oriented. Our vision is a Kenya — and an Africa — where research is a powerful tool for equitable health and well‑being. Over the next five years, we aim to train 100 research leaders, engage 20 counties, and directly impact the health of over 50,000 people through evidence‑based interventions.

Be part of our journey

Whether you are a researcher, a community leader, a policymaker, or a partner, we invite you to contribute to our mission. Together, we can translate evidence into lasting health and well‑being for all.
